Fragrant Thalia Daffodils: Graceful White Orchid Blooms
Thalia is an elegant, solid white variety that is highly fragrant and valued for its graceful, orchid-like form. Its outer petals curve slightly backward, forming a star that frames a long-throated cup, and many stems carry two or three nodding blossoms. Many people compare the flower to an orchid bloom because of its delicate shape and refined appearance. This Wister Award winner was introduced in 1916 and remains a favorite of daffodil lovers everywhere. Thalia typically grows 12” to 16” tall and blooms in mid to late spring, bringing a clean, luminous white accent to borders, woodland edges, and naturalized plantings.
Growing Conditions
Thalia grows best in well-drained soil with consistent moisture during the active growing season. It performs well in full sun to part shade, making it useful under deciduous trees where spring light reaches the ground before the leaves fully open. Like most daffodils, the bulbs should be planted in fall and left undisturbed so they can settle in and multiply over time.
Garden Uses
This variety is especially effective when planted in groups, where its white flowers create a soft drift of spring color. It pairs well with blue, purple, and yellow spring bulbs, and its modest height makes it suitable for border fronts, rock gardens, containers, and naturalized areas. Because daffodils are generally resistant to deer and rabbits, Thalia is also a dependable choice for gardens where spring bulbs may otherwise be disturbed by wildlife.
Care After Blooming
After the flowers fade, allow the foliage to remain until it yellows naturally. The leaves continue feeding the bulb for the following year’s bloom, so cutting them back too early can reduce future flowering. If clumps become crowded or bloom less heavily after several years, they can be divided after the foliage dies back.
