Tough as Texas: Why the Native Post Oak Deserves Our Respect
The Resilient Nature of the East Texas Post Oak
If there were an official tree for stubbornness, the post oak would certainly be in the running. Post oak, Quercus stellata, is one of the toughest and most characteristic native trees of East Texas. It grows where many other trees would rather not, often occupying dry, sandy, acidic, nutrient-poor soils that can be downright unforgiving.
Post oaks are easy to take for granted because they have always been part of our landscape. They are not available at most nurseries, rarely planted as ornamentals, and are not known for rapid growth. Instead, they specialize in persistence. Their slow growth produces dense, strong wood, and established trees can survive drought, heat, poor soil, and other hardships that would finish off less rugged species.
Key Features for Post Oak Identification
The leaves are distinctive and provide one of the easiest ways to identify the tree. They are dull green, thick, and leathery with rounded lobes, and the larger middle lobes often give the leaf the shape of a cross. The species name stellata, meaning star-like, refers to the tiny star-shaped hairs found on the undersides of the leaves and young twigs.
Ecological Importance & Wildlife Benefits
Post oak is a member of the white oak group, which means its acorns mature in a single growing season, and their leaf tips have no bristle tips like those in the red oak group. Those acorns are valuable food for deer, squirrels, wild turkeys, wood ducks, woodpeckers, blue jays, and other wildlife. Like other native oaks, post oak also supports an impressive assortment of caterpillars and other insects that in turn provide food for nesting and migrating birds.
Historical Uses of Post Oak Wood
Historically, post oak wood was valued for fence posts, railroad ties, and other uses requiring durable wood in contact with the soil. In fact, its common name reflects one of its most familiar uses. Farmers and ranchers knew that a post made from this dense, rot-resistant wood could last a long time.
Protecting Sensitive Post Oak Root Zones
One important lesson about post oaks is that tough does not mean indestructible. They are remarkably well adapted to the difficult sites where they naturally grow, but they do not appreciate sudden changes around their roots. Construction, soil compaction, trenching, grade changes, frequent irrigation, and root damage can stress old trees. Mature post oaks are often much happier when we leave their root zones alone rather than trying to improve their surroundings.
Upcoming Presentation: The Decline of Post Oaks
I will be talking about post oaks and their place in the Texas landscape at the Monday, September 14 meeting of the Tyler Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas. My program, “Postmortem: The Decline of Post Oaks and an Entire Ecosystem,” will begin at 4 p.m. at the Tyler Nature Center, 11942 FM 848 in Tyler.
My presentation will deal with the challenges facing post oaks; however, it will also celebrate a tree that deserves far more appreciation than it normally receives. Post oaks may not be fast, flashy, or fashionable, but they are genuine Texas survivors and a long part of our natural heritage.
Event Details & Public Invitation
The program is free and open to the public, and anyone interested in native plants, trees, wildlife, gardening, or the natural history of East Texas is invited to attend. Seating is limited to those arriving early so bring your own chair if you can.
