Wake Up Your Garden: How to Start a Successful Vegetable Harvest

January 16 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

January often feels like the quietest part of the gardening year, but it’s actually one of the most important. The steps we take now—before seeds, transplants, or warm weather arrive—can make all the difference in how our spring and summer vegetable gardens perform. That’s why the Smith County Master Gardeners are opening their 2026 Master Gardeners at the Library series with a topic every gardener can benefit from: getting your garden ready early.

On January 16, Dr. Andrew King, Assistant Professor at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research & Extension Center in Overton, will present “Waking Up Your Garden: Start for a Successful Vegetable Harvest.” Seating begins at 11:30 a.m., and the free program runs from 12 noon to 1 p.m. in the Taylor Auditorium at the Tyler Public Library.

Dr. King’s presentation will focus on the early-season steps gardeners can take now to set themselves up for a productive vegetable garden later. According to the event details, he’ll discuss “steps we can take now to prepare for a successful vegetable garden,” a topic that resonates strongly in East Texas, where soil preparation, weed control, planting plans, and winter cleanup can make or break the season ahead.

These foundational tasks may not be as glamorous as planting seedlings or picking ripe tomatoes, but they are essential. Dr. King brings both research experience and a deep understanding of our local climate and soils, making this an ideal opportunity for gardeners who want to begin the year with clarity and confidence.
