TYLER, TEXAS — Get ready to grow your own food this season! Local gardening experts are hosting the Successful Edible Gardening Spring Workshop on March 12, 2026, at the Tyler Rose Center Complex. Whether you have a sprawling backyard or a small balcony, this event provides the essential tools to create a thriving food garden.

This workshop is designed for gardeners of all skill levels who want to move beyond the grocery store aisle. Attendees will receive expert guidance on navigating the unique East Texas climate, optimizing limited space, and mastering organic techniques for healthier, more flavorful produce.

Session 1: Roots Matter: Understanding Soil Biology for Healthier Plants – Clint Perkins, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Smith County, AG/NR Agent
– 9:00 AM – 9:45 AM
– Introduction to soil health, preparation methods, and organic practices such as composting, mulching, and soil amendments. Enhance plant growth with a simple soil test, understand what it measures, and learn how to manage nutrients effectively.

Session 2: Designing Your Edible Garden – Greg Grant, PhD, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Smith County, Horticulture Agent
– 9:45 AM – 10:30 AM
– When creating a landscape that supports a thriving edible garden, consider key elements such as sun exposure, water access, and space planning. Review alternatives like a Community Garden or Container Gardening.

Session 3: Boosting Your Garden –Dale Wade, Smith County Master Gardener
– 10:45 AM – 11:30 AM
– Bring some spark to a little garden of tomatoes and peppers. Learn the best plant varieties, spacing, timing of plantings, and companion plants that will bring all the pollinators to your yard. By using a toolbox of techniques, you can increase yields and promote a healthier ecosystem.

Tour of the Tyler Botanical Gardens – IDEA Garden
11:30 AM – 12:00 PM
-Tour the IDEA garden to see a demonstration of effective composting techniques and various planting methods for warm-weather vegetables.
