SUMMARY:Application Deadline to become a Master Gardener
DESCRIPTION:All applications to become a Master Gardener must be submitted online by August 05\, 2026.  Not all applicants will be accepted into the program. Class size is limited\, and preference will be given to qualified Smith County residents with gardening experience\, dedication to education\, enthusiasm\, and time to volunteer. \n\n\n\nThe 2027 Smith County Master Gardener class will begin Thursday\, January 7.  Classes will be held every Thursday at the Cotton Belt Building (1517 W Front St) from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. through March 26\, 2024.  The $203 fee includes the 450-plus page Texas Master Gardener Handbook\, handouts\, refreshments\, speakers’ honoraria\, and travel expenses for visiting specialists. \n\n\n\nA mandatory orientation meeting for potential Master Gardener volunteers will be held at the Smith County AgriLife Extension office classroom (1517 W. Front St.) on Tuesday\, June 16\, 2026\, from 10-12\, Wednesday\, July 15th\, from 2-4\, or Friday\, August 07th from 1-3. (choose one). If you have questions\, call (903) 590-2980.

Front Street\, Tyler \nThe featured speaker will be Dawn Stover\, a horticulturist\, conservationist\, and consultant with The Nectar Connector. Stover specializes in helping gardeners develop landscapes that support pollinators and wildlife while maintaining beauty\, structure\, and functionality. During the program\, she will discuss how to thoughtfully select and combine native plants to create attractive\, well-designed gardens that provide ecological benefits year-round. \nNative plants have become increasingly popular across East Texas because they provide food and habitat for birds\, butterflies\, bees\, and other beneficial wildlife\, while often requiring less water\, fertilizer\, and pesticides once established. However\, many homeowners remain hesitant to use native plants because they perceive native gardens as wild or unorganized. This presentation will demonstrate how careful planning and plant selection can create landscapes that are both environmentally beneficial and aesthetically pleasing. \nThe program is especially timely for East Texas residents seeking gardening solutions that address summer heat\, drought\, and water conservation. Participants will learn practical strategies for choosing plants that thrive together and creating landscapes that are both sustainable and inviting. \nThe event welcomes home gardeners\, Master Gardeners\, Master Naturalists\, and anyone interested in enhancing their landscape with native plants.
