DESCRIPTION:SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 pm on February 12 in the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center\, 2900 Raguet Street\, Nacogdoches.  Ed Bush\, professor in the School of Plant\, Environmental and Soil Science at Louisiana State University\, will discuss “Growing Your Best Garden Plants Using Raised Beds.” \nBush teaches both undergraduate and graduate horticulture classes at LSU\, including plant propagation\, urban landscape management and nursery management.  His research interests are plant stress physiology and developmental nursery crops.  Bush has served as the LSU Coastal Roots Program since 2001\, and he has mentored over 100 high school and middle school students involved in the Louisiana Science Fair. \nThe Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series is held on the second Thursday of each month and includes a plant raffle after the program.  Attendance is free and open to the public\, and donations to the lecture series fund are always appreciated.  Parking is available at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center or next door at Raguet Elementary School\, 2708 Raguet Street. \nFor more information\, call (936) 468-4129 or email sfagardens@sfasu.edu.

It is also major threat to Earth’s biodiversity. Broad conservation strategies to address this situation include land-sparing\, which includes establishing reserves where human land uses are limited and natural processes are allowed to proceed\, and land sharing\, which seeks to improve the habitat provided by human-dominated landscapes. Prairie strips are an increasingly promoted land-sharing practice developed in the US Midwest. In this seminar\, Dr. Lisa Schulte Moore will present research knowledge and gaps regarding the use of prairie strips by multiple taxa\, including insects\, birds\, and reptiles. She will also discuss farmer interest in and barriers to establishing prairie strips. \nDr. Lisa Schulte Moore is the Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agricultural and Life Sciences in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management and director of the Bioeconomy Institute at Iowa State University. She works in large transdisciplinary teams of scientists\, engineers\, farmers\, farmland owners\, and representatives of government\, industry\, and NGOs to foster continuous living cover on agricultural landscapes. Her research supports the development of new agricultural markets to meet societal goals for sustainable food\, energy\, materials\, rural prosperity\, healthy soil\, clean water\, abundant wildlife\, and inspiring recreational opportunities. DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the Gertrude Windsor Garden Club will be a Community Event held in the Azalea Room at the Rose Garden Center on November 20th at 10:00 a.m. We are excited to feature Laura-Ashley Overdyke\, Executive Director of the Caddo Lake Institute. Additionally\, we have invited other Garden Clubs to participate in this event. \nWhen:  November 20\, 2025\nTime:   10:00 am to 12:00 pm\nWhere: Tyler Rose Garden Center\, Azalea Room \nCaddo Lake is Texas’s only naturally formed lake and is recognized as a Wetland of International Importance. It is rich in biodiversity\, history\, and opportunities for adventure. You will learn about what makes Caddo Lake so unique and the landscape-level conservation efforts that have made significant progress in the area. Alongside its rare plants and animals\, Caddo Lake is home to the state’s second state park\, making it a fantastic destination for visitors. \nHowever\, with these blessings come challenges. There are threats to the long-term viability of Caddo Lake. East Texas\, including Lake Palestine and the Tyler area\, is part of the larger Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex’s future water supply sources. The plants and wildlife of Caddo\, along with its rich history and burgeoning tourism industry\, depend on receiving the right amount of water at the right time for their long-term survival. Caddo Lake is a true gem of East Texas\, and water management is a critical issue throughout Texas. \nThese important topics will be discussed as we hear from Laura-Ashley Overdyke\, the Executive Director of the Caddo Lake Institute\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to scientific conservation. \nWe look forward to seeing you on November 20th!

DESCRIPTION:This November\, Tyler will host an event that brings together landowners\, agricultural professionals\, and community leaders from across Texas. The Landowners Association of Texas (LAT)\, in partnership with the Smith County Landowners Association\, will present its 46th Annual State Conference November 13–15\, 2025\, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center on South Broadway Avenue in Tyler. \nThe conference theme\, “Sustaining Agriculture in a Changing World: Innovate\, Adapt\, Thrive\,” highlights the importance of resilience in today’s agricultural landscape. Whether you manage family farmland\, raise cattle\, explore new crops\, or are simply interested in conservation\, this gathering offers valuable tools and connections. \nThe event begins Thursday\, November 13\, at the Holiday Inn\, with a luncheon sponsored by the Smith County Landowners Association. Attendees will then have the option of cultural and educational excursions. These include a guided tour of the African American Museum\, a tour of the Tyler Botanical Garden by yours truly\, and information from the East Texas Genealogy Associates on DNA testing. The evening will conclude with the option to purchase burgers and beverages at the Conference Center\, providing time for fellowship. \nFriday\, November 14\, marks the official start of the conference at the hotel\, with registration opening at 6:30 a.m. and sessions beginning at 7:45 a.m. Throughout the day\, panels and speakers will tackle timely issues such as land conservation\, sustainable farming\, and food security. These sessions are designed to provide both practical solutions and big-picture strategies for Texas landowners navigating an uncertain climate and marketplace. The evening concludes with a dance after dinner. \nOn Saturday\, November 15\, the event concludes with a continental breakfast\, followed by a presentation that showcases cutting-edge technology in land management.
